An introduction to EVERGREEN
Monday January 23 2012
[and my introduction to the world of sustainable fashion]
I am thrilled to be co-producing an exhibition that combines two of my greatest passions: Sustainability and Fashion.
The collections of the chosen designers are equally beautiful and sustainable - they do not have a particular ‘eco’ aesthetic and are desirable well beyond their environmental and ethical responsibility. Just as an evergreen remains fresh, enduring and vital, Julia Knüpfer, Georgia McCorkill and Holly McQuillan design garments to retain significance and value.
I began my own research by asking, What exactly is sustainable fashion? ...How do these values influence the choices of the designer and the wearer?
Terms such as eco, green, ethical, ecological and environmental are the sorts of ‘buzz words’ that surround sustainability, often without clarification or substantiation. The following definitions helped me to form a more holistic understanding of the many considerations that make a garment truly sustainable.
• What is ethical fashion?
• What is sustainable about fashion?
• A start on the definition of sustainable fashion.
During my research I discovered that there are many ways to enjoy fashion with less harm to the environment that result in gain rather than sacrifice.
I look forward to sharing with you interviews with eco designers, further research into materials and processes, and interactive material to allow you to explore the wide range of sustainable options available to wearers.
I truly hope you enjoy the exhibition, opening 27 January 2012 in Object’s Project Space.
